Eragon finds a smooth stone and when he tries to buy meat with it the store keeper says, "Why are you trying to buy meat with a stone?" Eragon says, "Well, who would carve this stone if it didn't have value?" Eragon is fighting a shade. A shade is someone who can only be killed stabbing him in the heart.
